Bridges
Bridge building will begin following the
concepts of Significant Figures, Vectors and Scalers, 1-D Motion, 2-D
Motion, Forces, and Momentum.
Students will have one day to plan, 5 work days and one day to test.
Requirements:
- Each group will be given 500 milk straws (14.6 cm long), a pair of scissors, a hot glue gun and 2 sticks of hot glue.
- The brige must span an open distance of 50 cm.
- It must hold at a minimum 250 g at its center.
- The bridge may only be touching the tops of the testing area.
- The bridge may not be secured to the areas on either end of the 50 cm span.
- There is no maximum for length, width or height.
Mousetrap Cars
The cars cover the concepts of Torque, Force, 1D Motion, Rotational Motion, and Centripital Motion
Students will have 5 days to build and test cars.
Requirements:
- Each group will be given three, quarter inch dowels, a mousetrap, a 50 cm length of string, 6 washers, and 3 sticks of glue.
- Wheels can be brought by the group.
- The car must hold 250 grams.
- The car is put through 3 tests: velocity, distance, and payload distance.
- The winner receives a 100%, each group below is docked 2% points.
Electric Cars
The
cars cover the concepts of Torque, Energy, Simple Machines, Work,
Power, Rotational Motion, Centripital Motion, 1D Motion, and Simple
Circuits.
Students will have 5 days to build and test cars.
Requirements:
- Each
group will be given three, quarter inch dowels, an electric motor, 4
wires with clips, two 9-volt bateries, a rubberband, 6 washers, and
three sticks of glue.
- Wheels can be brought by group.
