Northside Speech-Language Program

Hi!  I am Rosemary Woodman, the Speech-Language Therapist at Northside Elementary School.  I work with students improving their speech (i.e. articulation, fluency, voice, hypernasality, etc.) and language (i.e. listening, speaking, reading, writing, etc.) skills.

Northside students work on a variety of Speech-Language skills!  Students working on improving their articulation and fluency skills practice using word, phrase, sentence lists, reading passages, and conversation activities.  They practice speech paired with movement (i.e. Habit Club) and while using different vocal inflections such as whispering, speaking loudly, asking a question, etc.  These activities require students to correctly articulate and/or speak fluently while concentrating on more than one activity.  Students working on improving their language skills work on tasks such as vocabulary, sequencing, following directions, comprehension of information, definitions and descriptions, categories, problem-solving, using correct grammar, and expanding and extending their sentences to include more information.  Additionally, students have been working on improving social skills such as greetings, turn-taking, raising their hand to talk, and conversational skills (i.e. appropriately interrupting, joining in on a conversation, etc.).

We have a "turtle" theme in our classroom!  Turtles are our "reminders" for using good speech and language skills.  (Turtles "walk slow," so we "talk slow" and remember to use our strategies!)  Students work on their skills through a variety of theme-based activities such as Back-to-School, Apples (Hey, we live in  Nebraska City!), Halloween, Fire Safety, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Snowmen, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, etc.  Additionally, we work on children's book author units such as Eric Carle's "My Apron," Jan Brett's "The Mitten," Dr. Seuss's "Yertle the Turtle," and of course, Paulette Bourgeois's and Brenda Clark's "Franklin the Turtle" books!
