1-4.1 Acceptance of Commissions, Gifts or Gratuities
The Superintendent or the Board of Education may accept gifts intended
for use by schools provided that there are no restrictions placed on
the acceptance that will discriminate among pupils on any basis other
than school grade or subject; nor will acceptance of such gift limit
the Board in fulfilling its duties in the operation of the schools.
The Administration and Board of Education encourages gifts be submitted through the NCPS Foundation.
Capital or Program Improvements:
Memorials or other gifts to the school district which represent capital
or program improvements may be accepted under the following terms:
- Board of Education approval is required before the acceptance of any gift.
- Gifts accepted by the Board of Education must be without
collateral agreementsor maintenance of the article, restrictions,
or conditions on its use, or commitment for replacement.
- Gifts shall not promote a political cause or a religious view.
- Publicity releases and announcements about gifts made to the
district shall not precede action of acceptance by the Board of
Education.
Memorial Guidelines:
Memorial items including, but not limited to, pictures, plaques, or
busts commemorating or memorializing a student, staff member, or
community member will not be accepted for placement or attachment on
school buildings or grounds.
Appropriate memorials for students and staff include:
- A memorial scholarship administered by the Nebraska City Public
School Foundation or the Nebraska City Public Schools Alumni
Association.
- Purchase of school supplies, library books and equipment.
Wording in books or on approved engraved plates shall be limited to “In
Memory of” and the contributor’s legal name. Any engraved plate
may be removed after ten years and offered to the family.
- Plantings on school grounds, with prior approval by the Buildings
and Grounds Committee and acceptance by the Board of Education. A
nameplate may be provided, with wording limited to the name of the
planting and “In Memory of” the legal name of the person memorialized,
and dates of birth and death. Plates may be removed after ten
years and offered to the family of the person memorialized.
- Funds for a particular school activity or department, with prior
approval of the Building Principal and the Superintendent, and
acceptance by the Board of Education.
School Yearbook/Student Newspaper Guidelines
Memorials for students or staff in a school-sponsored publication will
be in accordance with the district policy on student
publications. Publication staff will confer with their Building
Principal before publishing a student memorial.
Student memorials will be for students who were enrolled in the Nebraska City Public Schools at the time of their death.
