Attendance Policy
ATTENDANCE
ATTENDANCE POLICY (3-1.3)
This policy is for all Nebraska City High School Students (grades
9-12). Excessive absenteeism is defined as more than eight absences per
semester from one or more classes for any reason other than school
sponsored activities. If you are more than 20 minutes late to class you
will be counted absent instead of tardy. Students participating in
sanctioned school activities will be considered present.
They will, however, be responsible for any class work missed. Students
absent from school should return to school with a note to verify their
absence. Excessive absenteeism from Study Halls (where no credit is
given or withheld) will be handled in such a manner as the school
administration sees fit. When a student has been absent from a class or
classes for four (4) times in a semester their parent/guardian will be
notified by telephone or letter as reminder of attendance status of
that student. A second telephone call or letter will be mailed upon the
eighth (8) absence from any class or classes. Upon the ninth (9)
absence in a semester, a letter with an attendance contract will be
sent to the parent/guardian outlining the situation and action needed
for the student to earn credit for the current term. If the student
and/or parent/guardian wish to keep said student from losing credit all
stipulations of the contract written by the administration need to be
successfully completed. The student, parent/guardian, and a high school
administrator will sign the contract. At the end of the semester, that
student’s attendance record will be reviewed as to whether they have
met the conditions of the contract. They will receive the credit they
have earned. If a student does not meet the conditions of the contract,
their credit will be withheld for the current semester regardless of
academic average.
TARDY
Students will be allowed one tardy per semester. Any student that goes
over one tardy will be assigned detention for every tardy thereafter.
Extreme tardiness may result in suspension from school or activities.
ADVANCE MAKE-UP SLIPS
Students who know that they are going to absent for all or part of a
school day or days (includes absences for school activities) must get
an advance make-up slip from the office, have all of their teachers
sign it and it must be turned into the office prior to the absence. TEACHERS WILL NOT SIGN ADVANCE MAKE-UP SLIPS if students are not meeting class requirements, thus they will not be excused from school.
DOCTOR’S EXCUSES
If a student has been ill and SEEN BY A DOCTOR, he/she should bring a
note from the Doctor WHEN THEY RETURN TO SCHOOL, to be kept on file in
case the student wishes to appeal for credit if they surpass eight (8)
absences in a semester.
MAKE-UP WORK
Teachers will allow students two days for every day missed to make up
their work. However, five days is the maximum number of days that will
be allowed, unless special circumstances warrant more time. All
assignments given prior to an absence (either planned absences, school
related absences or absences due to illness) will be due on the same
schedule as those who were in attendance. Absences will not buy more time.
PARTIAL DAY ABSENCES--SIGNING IN/OUT
When a student misses the first part of the school day he/she must
report to the office when arriving in school. If a student must leave
school during the school day they must have permission from an
administrator and then sign out in the office before leaving.
