From the NSAA handbook
- Competition in speech activities promotes growth by comparison and encourages the pursuit of excellence.
- Winning is not the only reason that competition is important to speech programs. Participants in speech activities should certainly understand how to lose. We all live daily with winning and losing. Speech activities proved an opportunity for an educationally controlled exploration in the ocmpetitive world.
- If the goal is to win the trophy, the odds are still so great as to automatically suggest defeat. No loss of a trophy can take away the multitude of educational experiences available to students in speech activities. Your students lose only if they are not prepared for the experience, and their minds are closed to the informed comments of the judge. Even the poorest judge has something to offer.
