Middle School Grading

Grading: Most of your grade is determined by your classroom participation. The following categories describe how you control the grade you earn in band:

Daily Work/Listening (65%)
Examples: Participation in full band rehearsals, with reasonable mastery of the music; marching (7th and 8th only); having all materials for class; written homework done on time; doing makeup work promptly. Forgetting your instrument does not excuse you from rehearsal. Each rehearsal is 100 points. 50 points for the day will be deducted for forgetting your instrument. Points may also be deducted for being late to the bandroom and/or your seat. Points may be made up for forgetting your instrument by practicing at home and turning it in as makeup. Listening is a skill necessary for a large group rehearsal. You are expected to listen to the director, other students playing or the class discussion. If you are talking, you are liable to lose points in this category.

Concerts and Performances (15%)
Concerts are your final test grades and should be taken seriously. Everyone who rehearses is needed at a concert, and everyone’s contribution is necessary for a complete sound. If you have to miss for illness or other excused absence, you will have the opportunity to make up the grade for full credit. Unexcused absences will limit the makeup grade to half credit.

Practice (8%)
Practice can be used to raise your grade by adding points to your overall grade or by making up for points lost due to forgetting your instrument or excess talking. One half hour will make up for a missed rehearsal, and one hour will raise your grade. Turn in practice each week.

Tests and Quizzes (12%)
Examples: Playing tests done in class or lessons, written quizzes and tests in lessons, marching tests done outside.

Extra Credit (up to 10%)
Extra credit may be earned by: Reports written on a pre-approved topic, working on a solo or honor band audition material, or by bringing programs from concerts that you have attended (other than your own!). See the director if you have other projects you would like to apply to extra credit.
