Syllabus

2005-06 Senior High Band

Your grade in instrumental music is based on several factors:

1. ATTENDANCE This is the most important part of your grade. If you are present at all rehearsals and performances, you have done most of what is expected of you.

2. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR You are expected to pay attention to instructions at all times. Respect all students and instruments. Listen and follow instructions.

3. PLAYING TESTS You will have at least one playing test each 9 weeks. Each test will be asking you to show a certain technique and/or scale that is important to know as a musician. They will also cover sections of the music being prepared for performance.

4. EFFORT This means that you try at all times. It does not matter how well you play. With effort you will improve and that is what I want to see - improvement.

5. RESPONSIBILITY This area covers several things: being to class on time; daily planner, having a pencil and all materials (extra reeds, valve oil, etc.) you need in class with you; contributing to every rehearsal; giving your instrument proper care, etc. . .Storing instruments properly (reeds off mouthpiece), cases in proper place with clasps latched. Percussion all equipment and mallets in proper place. Music put away correctly.

Uniforms: You will be shown the proper way to hang the uniform. Uniforms will be hung up correctly after each use. These uniforms are expensive and need to be taken care of properly. Fines will be assessed for improperly hung uniforms. Uniform Cost:: Coat - $171 Bibbers - $78 Baldric/Cape - $58 Hat/Plume - $48

6. ATTENDANCE AT ALL CONCERTS, CONTESTS, AND PARADES

THIS IS MANDATORY! If you miss a concert, contest, or parade for an illness or family emergency, you must bring a written explanation from your parents. Unexcused absences from concerts and contests may result in you failing the class. Excused absences can be made up, see me to arrange make-up work.

7. PEP BANDS If you are at the game then I expect you to play in pep band. If you are not going to be at the game I need to know. A minimum number of pep bands each quarter need to be attended for full credit. Sign up sheet will be posted before each pep band.

8. FINAL EXAMS Each semester there will be a final exam covering the music that was rehearsed that semester. The exam will cover terminology, historical significance, composer/arranger names and backgrounds.

Please keep me informed of any time that you know that you will be missing class. This includes school sponsored activities, student council meetings, dentist appointments, etc… The reason I need to know this is that I plan to work on different sections of the music every day and if you are going to be gone I will try not to work on an important section of yours.

Please follow these simple procedures and you will find that Band is a class in which you can earn a relatively easy high mark.

All members of the Nebraska City Pioneer Band will be expected to portray a positive attitude toward the Band Program, the Director, and the other members of the Band. In addition, each member will be expected to comply with the code of conduct for activities as set in the student handbook. Band members will be expected to demonstrate behavior that is a positive reflection upon themselves, the school, and the community.
