Changes In Matter Makes Ice Cream

Course: Fourth Grade Science

Outcome / Objective: Students will learn that the state of matter can change.


Standard:

4.1.3 By the end of fourth grade, students will develop an understanding of change, constancy, and measurement.

4.3.1 By the end of fourth grade, students will develop an understanding of the characteristics of objects and materials.

Formative Assessment: Each student will be given ingredients and the procedure to follow to change the state of matter of given objects.

Teacher Methods: The teacher will guide a discussion on changes in matter. The teacher will demonstrate the way particles in matter move during the states of a solid, liguid, or gas. The hands held together as a fist will represent the solid where the particles have little room to move around and are close together. The hands held with the finger tips touching and sliding will represent the moving and sliding of a liguid. The fingers pointing around the room will represent the particles of a gas jumping all over the place which makes gas difficult to see.

Teacher Methods: The teacher will guide students through the making of ice cream to demonstrate how to change the solid (ice) into a liguid, and how to change the liguid (milk, sugar, and vanilla)into a solid (ice cream).

Student Activities: Students will practice and participate in the modeling of the teacher of the 3 states of matter and how the particles in them move.

Student Activities: Students will measure out the ingredients and follow directions for the procedure to make the ice cream.

Recipe: for an individual serving

  • 1 pint-size sealable plastic bag
  • 1 gallon-size sealable plastic bag
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Milk
  • 6 Tablespoons Salt (Rock salt works best.)
  • 1 Hand Towel
  • Spoon and Napkin

Procedure:

  • Fill the gallon-size (large) bag half full of ice
  • Put salt in with the ice
  • Pour milk, vanilla, and sugar into the pint-sized (small) bag. Seal it.
  • Place the small bag inside the large one and seal agin carfully
  • Knead for about five minutes until mixture is ice cream. Use a towel to keep your hands from getting cold.

Summative Assessment: Students will individually complete the activity and make their own changes to the given matter.

Criterion For Outcome: Students will be assessed on the chapter test as to how particles of matter move. The assessment of the activity will be Pass if they end up with ice cream to eat, or Try Again if they do not have ice cream to eat.
