Star Lab

During the middle school science fair held at Humboldt in the spring of 2002, a special showing of the Star Lab was arranged by elementary teacher Deb Avery through ESU #5. All students had opportunity to enjoy this hands-on planetarium. Teachers took students to the planetarium during science classes for classroom activities.

What is a Star Lab? It is an inflatable planetarium that is portable. StarLab fits nito the Science Standards (4.5.2: By the end of fourth grade, students will develop an understanding of objects in the sky and 4.5.3: By the end of fourth grade, students will develop an understanding of the changes in the earth and sky. These standards are also mentioned at the Kindergarten & First Grade levels.

As students climbed into the panetarium on hands and knees the atmosphere and setting changed from classroom to one of outdoors. Students layed beneathe the stars and gazed at new sights. Students became excited about astrononmy as they gazed at the stars and looked for consellations. The Star Lab allowed students to look at and discuss findings with each other with the feeling of being outside at night.
