History Day Results

Peru State College hosted their 25th History Day competition. Dr. Sara Crook started this program with 1 student in 1 room with 1 judge. Now this competition has grown to 250 participants, 70 judges, and numerous judge assistants. Awards are earned for the top 3 individual and group entries for these categories; (1) Historical Paper, (2) Exhibit, (3) Performance, (4) Documentary, and (5) Website. Students can participate in 2 levels: Junior and Senior. Those who place first, second, or third earn the honor of competing in the State History Day Competition in April. Then the top two entries will get to go on to the National History Day competition. Peru Historical Foundation provides a trophy for the best entry focusing on an historical event or person of Nebraska. Arbor Lodge donates a book and a “Friends of Arbor Lodge” single membership to the best entry involving Nebraska and/or environmental issues. Nebraska City Museum Association sponsors an award with individual trophies for the best use of oral history interviews in an individual or group entry.

HTRS had seven Sixth Grade students, who represented our school in the District History Day held on Wed., February, 25th. Carrisa Carlin, Casey McNealy, and Ashton Nanninga entered a display on Gerald Ford in the Junior Group Exhibits. This category contained 39 entries. Their display won the Nebraska Arbor Lodge contest. Schuyler Kuhlmann entered an individual exhibit about Albert Einstein and received a participation award. He competed against 39 other individuals. Nicholas Anthony, Noah Sherman, and Ben Railsback entered a powerpoint movie about Abraham Lincoln in the Junior Documentary category and placed third. There were 12 entries in this category. These boys will represent HTRS at the Sate History Day contest on April 18th at Wesleyan University in Lincoln.

The Fifth Grade Challenge Students attended this event in order to prepare for next year’s competition. These students viewed the display exhibits and observed some of the documentaries and plays that were performed. This gave them an idea of what the competition and the winning entries are like. They found out that the theme for next year is “Intervening History” by knowing this ahead of time they can start preparing.

Students enjoyed the special events that were held on campus. This year there was a special historical character at History Day. Dr. Spencer Davis, professor of History at Peru State College, portrayed Abraham Lincoln. He walked around campus and held a session in the theatre for students to discuss and ask questions about his life. There was a magic show during lunch in the cafeteria and the weather was terrific for strolling around and visiting the Peru State College campus. All the students enjoyed the day and represented themselves, their families, and our school in an excellent manner. I am proud to be their teacher!

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the following people:
•    Students who gave up personal time before and after school as well as during the school day.
•    Middle School Teachers who changed their plans and excused students from class to do research and complete projects.
•    Sponsors: Mrs. Nanninga and Mrs. Anthony who spent the day with us.
•    Administrators at both sites for supporting the HAL program and providing the students with the opportunity to participate in History Day.
