Safe Surfing

computer1: The internet is a wonderful and useful tool for our children and us. There are numerous positive things that I could write about internet usage. BUT as we know where there is a positive side there is also a negative side.

We want our children to be safe! We try to shield them from things that are harmful like germs, dangerous toys, inappropriate TV shows, and we teach them to not talk to strangers. We even go as far as to try and encourage them to have safe friendships. Technology can also be a danger.

I'm sure that you have heard on the radio or seen on the news information about websites that people use to share information with peers. Some of these sites are: myspace, xena, facebook, bebo, great journals, and so on. These have been a great way to keep in touch with our family and friends in the armed forces. However there is also a down side. Putting personal information on the internet is dangerous.

These sites are a "predator's heaven". People surf these sites looking for information to use in negative ways. Just like our children can be put in a car and kidnapped by a stranger, they can be stalked.  These predators encourage our children to meet them and usually then disappear. These stalkers portray themselves as peers when they are really somebody else with a negative or dangerous agenda. These people take advantage of our children and other innocent users.

Our children are very trusting and many have the idea "it won't happen it me." Please supervise your children's internet access just like the phone, music, or TV. Ask them not to give out information such as where they live, who they are, age, passwords, photos with names, or school locations.
