April is Internet Safety month. I am very concerned about how much time our children spend on line and with summer coming they could spend more of their unstructured time online. The purpose of the Net Smart Unit was to make Fifth and Sixth Grade students at HTRS Middle School aware of dangers online. Students visited the Net Smartz Kids web page which is an interactive web site that uses shockwave. Students learn how to be safe using the internet through activities such as videos, music, and by  playing 3-D learning games all dealing with internet safety.

The NetSmartz Workshop focus on these online safety rules.

  • I will not share any personal information ( name, age, sex, address, birthdate, etc.)
  • I will tell an adult I trust if anything makes me feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused.
  • I won't meet in person with anyone I have first "met" online.

On Monday, April 16, 2007 fifth and sixth grade students participated in a special event where Mr. Gregg Robke from ESU 4 presented on Internet Safety. He stressed the importance of keeping personal information private. He suggested that students who have webpages on myspace or facebook to keep them private and only allow people who they know and trust to have access. He showed videos about real life people being harassed and abducted through the use of the internet. He shared with students how a predictor can take 1 piece of information and find out all about you and where you live. Mr. Robke also informed students that what they put on these pages may be on there forever and could affect them later in their adult life.

  • 1 in 7 children who regularly use the Internet are asked to do things they find uncomfortable
  • 1 in 11 are harassed or threatened
  • 31 percent are asked to meet
  • 79 percent of meetings occur in the child's home
  • 56 percent do not tell anyone about the meeting

To finish up the unit, students created their own internet safety posters
