Social Studies / Technology Unit:  Early American Explorers

Learning Description:  Students will take a virtual journey with Lewis and Clark.

Standard(s) Addressed: 
8.1.5  By the end of the eighth grade, students will describe growth and change in the United States from 1801 - 1861.

Objective(s):

  1. Students will use the internet to complete a virtual expedition with Lewis and Clark.
  2. Students will travel the trail, read, and summarize information by reading journal entries posted on the web.
  3. Students will complete the Lewis & Clark webquest.

Materials:

  • Computer with internet connection.
  • Word Processing and PowerPoint Programs

Preparation/Introduction:
Students will be assigned computers and a partner that sits next to them. Students will take turns using the internet sites on one computer and the word processing or webquest on the other computer.

Instructional Method: 

Day 1: The teacher will instruct students on how to perform basic computer skills such as: creating a new folder, using the word processing program, saving documents, getting connected to the internet, bookmarking sites.

Day 2: The teacher will assist students in previewing the websites to used during the unit. Students will explore these sites to get an idea of what information is available. This may need to be coninuted the next day.

Day 3: The teacher will continue to led students in investigating the internet sites.

Day 4: The teacher will direct students in how to get started with the journal writing using a word processing program on one machine and the other student using that computer to visit places and journal entries on the internet. Students will then read the information available at each site or journal entry and write a one or two sentence summary.

Day 5 - 8: Students will need to contiue to work on summaries.

Day 9: The teacher will present the webquest to students. This will then need to be available to students on their machines so that they can complete the activity.

Day 10: This is the evaluation. Give students a paper copy of the questions asked for the webquest. Provide directions. This may take a couple of days depending on the time alloted.

Day 11 -13: Allow students to continue with the evaluation.

Day 14: Plan a special finale. Watch a video with popcorn. Visit one of the resources in the webquest. These might be: Lewis & Clark Center in Nebraska City or The  Meriwether Lewis Museum in Brownville.

Assessment: 

 The assessment will be the completion of the webquest worksheets. Students will complete the webquest with an 80% or above criteria.
