Safety Rules
Learning Description: Identifying job descriptions as they relate to school safety issues.

1.7.1 By the end of first grade, students will develop an understanding of personal health.
Objective(s):
1. The student will identify safety rules for school.
2. The student will identify jobs that promote safety rules at school.

Preparation/Introduction:
Presenters visited class to share how important safety rules are in their jobs. They discussed with the class specific areas of their jobs where safety is of the utmost importance.
Instructional Method:
Students compiled questioned that related to the issues of school safety in the school building. The presenters gave helpful insight into the safety factors related to their jobs such as equipment safety (e.g., knives, hot ovens and stoves in the kitchen, spills can cause dangerous conditions. Dangers of cleaning compounds were explained as well as the importance of thinking “is this safe?” before becoming involved in dangerous behaviors. Following this presentation students developed and illustrated “If” and “Then” statements to help explore cause and effect as they relate to safety issues.

Students were actively engaged in thinking about safety issues and the consequences for not observing safety in their behaviors.
