Preparation/Introduction:
Students informally gather to observe, discuss and explore the various nuts Mrs. Howe has brought to share.
Instructional Method:
Mrs. Howe displays and discusses each type of nut she has brought and what they are used for (e.g., people food or animal/ squirrel food). A mirror mirage was observed by students and the vocabulary word mirage was used in the lesson to emphasize the fact that peanuts are legumes and not nuts.
Describe how this lesson incorporated hands-on inquiry science methods:
Students were allowed to explore nuts with sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste and to then choose a characteristic from which they determine catagories for sorting the nuts.
Describe how this lesson enhanced higher level thinking skills for students:
Describe any collaboration used to contribute to the lesson:
Mrs. Howe, retired school teacher visits the first grade regularly and brings a science lesson or one of her collections to enhance student learning. Assessment: (Explain how student understanding will be evaluated.) Students have papers labeled with names of the various nuts presented and teacher is able to check off their accuracy in sorting the various nuts into the correct labeled category.
