Staying Healthy

Science Unit:  Staying Healthy

Learning Description: Student Exploration conducted to conclude what snacks have high fat content to be avoided.

Standard(s) Addressed:

1.7.1 By the end of first grade, students will develop an understanding of personal health.

Objective(s):

1. Student will develop awareness, habits and actions needed to stay safe and healthy.

2. Students classify food groups based upon one property of testing them for fat content.

Materials:

  • brown
  • paper squares
  • oil
  • eye dropper
  • snacks

Preparation/Introduction:

Teacher models process where students work in pairs to explore which snacks have a lot of fat content. Instructional Method: Each food name is written on one paper square. A drop of oil is placed on one square. Observation is made of change in the brown paper after oil applied. Oil is explained as one kind of fat. Students rub each snack on a paper square and hold the paper to the light to see if the paper will show that the food has fat content.

Describe how this lesson incorporated hands-on inquiry science methods: Observing the fat content in different snacks helps students classify groups based upon one property of fat content.

Describe how this lesson enhanced higher level thinking skills for students: Students should be able to observe foods with high fat content and apply their observations to adjust their eating habits accordingly.

Describe any collaboration used to contribute to the lesson:

Assessment:

Students will record their finding by answering and illustrating where appropriate, what they found out questions: How did the oil change the paper? How did each snack change the paper? Which snacks have a lot of fat? What could you decide to do as a result of these findings?
