Learning About the World

Science Unit: Learning About The World

Learning Description: Observe sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch of unpopped and popped popcorn.

Standard(s) Addressed:

1.1.1 By the end of first grade, students will develop an understanding of systems, order, and organization.

Objective(s):

1. The student will use five senses to predict, observe and record changes within the student’s environment.

2. The student will identify which senses correspond to what body parts.

Materials:

  • Unpopped popcorn
  •  air popper
  • eyes
  • ears
  • nose
  • mouth
  • hands
  • worksheet to expand, assess and reinforce observations and findings.

Preparation/Introduction:

Students informally gather to observe, discuss and explore the changes that could take place with a kernel of popcorn. Instructional Method: Students make predictions about what will happen to the popcorn kernels when other external factors are applied (HEAT + POPCORN KERNELS = Yummy Snack)! Corn kernels are popped and student’s senses go into action! Students are encouraged to use descriptive language and express each sense before and after heat is applied.

Describe how this lesson incorporated hands-on inquiry science methods: Students were able to hear/ears, see/eyes/, smell/nose, touch/ hands, taste/mouth the popcorn before and after heat applied.

Describe how this lesson enhanced higher level thinking skills for students:

Assessment:

Students illustrate each body part and use one or two words to describe how their sense responded to the stimuli of popping popcorn. The descriptive portion could be written or oral.
