Preparation/Introduction:
Upon completion of chapter 4 of the third grade Science textbook (Where Plants and Animals Live) students were asked to demonstrate their knowledge of the different habitats by creating a model of their choice.
Instructional Method:
During the teaching of the chapter, the teacher taught the different components that made up each habitat students were involved in discussion and questions sessions. Students also viewed a variety of videos depicting the habitats.
Describe how this lesson incorporated hands-on inquiry science methods:
Students used hands-on inquiry science while creating their habitat dioramas.
Describe how this lesson enhanced higher level thinking skills for students:
Higher order thinking skills were enhanced by when students identified relationships between objects and events while making their model.
Assessment:
Students were assessed in their ability to complete the project on time, their creativity in coming up with replicas to represent the components of their habitats. Students were required to accurately depict their habitat.
Example: forest: trees, brush, forest animals, river,
desert: sand, rocks, and cactus, desert animals
