Mathematics Lesson Plan
Standards Based Unit
Course: Fourth Grade Mathematics
Outcome: Upon completion of unit, students will:
- Solve problems by counting back change from a purchase price to the
amount given, using the
fewest coins possible.
- Calculate
change through subtraction, then demonstrate that knowledge by choosing the
correct bills and coins to
make this amount.
- Count the value of a given set of coins.
- Identify the value of coins.
Nebraska Standard:
Standard 4.1.5 By
the end of the fourth grade, students will make change and
count out in
amounts up to $20.00.
Formative Assessment: (Before beginning the unit on money, each student will be given a
plastic bag with play money in the following amounts: four pennies, one nickel, two dimes, three
quarters, four one dollar bills, one
five dollar bill, and one ten dollar bill. These amounts are given to
encourage student to always use least amount of coins possible to count change.)
Students will:
-
Participate
in classroom
discussion pertaining to value of different coins and bills and their
values, then be able to demonstrate
memorization of that knowledge to the teacher.

Show the money amount given by using their play money.
-
Show the amount of change to be received by using play money.

Complete given assignments (pages 40 and 41 in McGraw Hill Math In My World and Practice and Reteach worksheets that accompany the series) to demonstrate an understanding of the value of coins/bills and the concept of making change.
Teacher Methods:
- Instruction to class of value of specific coins and bills
- Review skip counting by fives and tens to aid students in counting money
- Review basic subtraction to aid in finding amount of change needed
- Instruction to class of counting change to a given amount of money
- Facilitate discussions and review during class regarding the above concepts
- Demonstrate counting change to a given amount
Student Activities:
- Play review game (Money Fun!) to find the value of coins and bills and to tell a specific amount of money
- Participate in classroom activities involving review of money concepts
- Individually complete textbook pages and worksheet pages specified above
Resources:
- Teacher-made game
- McGraw Hill textbook and worksheets
- Pencils/paper
- Play money (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, one-dollar bills, five-dollar bills, ten-dollar bills)
- Internet access for additional support and fun

Extensions:
- Students may play games on internet during their free time
- Students may invent additional ways to play the Money Fun! game
- Student may work in groups to come up with additional activities to perfect their money skills
Summative Assessment:
- Students will complete assessment over state Standard 4.1.5. This assessment contains both oral and written sections.
Criterion for Outcome:
- 75% of the class will score 80% or greater on the assessment
