Huskers and Hope

It was good for us...
"Too often, constant perfection in the execution of something masks the humanity of an achievement. Occasional slips offer the opportunity to appreciate success when it is achieved"... from a November 2002, article written by Larry Kubert for the Lincoln Journal-Star. To whom is this quote referring? Albert Einstein? George Bush? The Nebraska Cornhuskers? Nope. It was a comic juggler who performed at the Lied Center. A common juggler teaching us of life.
Lance Armstrong once said that his cancer was good for him. In the recent Tour de France, a simple mistake leveled him on the route, and it was because of that mistake that he dug in, his face a reflection of fierce determination, and had his best performance of the Tour. As he overcame his cancer, he overcame a simple bicycle crash. An uncommon bicyclist teaching us of life.
Saturday is the first Nebraska Cornhusker game of the season. In my opinion, last year was good for us. Our afflictions help us grow. We learn from our mistakes. "Occasional slips offer the opportunity to appreciate success when it is achieved." It is juggling. It is cycling. It is life. Last season was good for us... good for the players, good for the fans, good for the coaches who stayed and good for the coaches who moved on to new advertures in their lives.
Author Barbara Kingsolver says, "I have a litany of frustrations, as everyone does, but ultimately I try to be hopeful because I don't see any decent alternative. Cynicism is irresponsible. Having hope is a much more healthy way to live." In life, in football, everyone needs hope. Saturday is the first game of the season. I plan to be hopeful.
Ellen's Note... Well done Sandy! Here's to Hope!
